Family Fitness Tips
Here are some fun ideas that you can do at home. We've put them into
age groups, but that don't let that stop you from trying any of them if
they sound like fun! Think about ways you can adapt the activities if
you have to stay inside because of bad weather.
These are activities and ideas that you can do at home.
For two-to-three year olds:
- Pretend to be animals, hop like a frog or a bunny, walk like a penguin, or flap your arms like a bird.
- Pretend you are a caterpillar and bend at the waist, walking on your hands forward and inching along.
- Listen to fun, happy music and dance together.
For four-to-five year olds:
- Play "Follow-the-Leader" and mix it up with different actions like hopping, walking backwards or sideways, add funny arm movements or jumping.
- Play kickball with a nerf ball (indoors) or a plastic ball (outdoors).
- Practice playing T-ball
- Play freeze tag or statues
- Walk to the library with mom or dad to get a book.
- Have a picnic in the park with mom and dad.
For Six-to-Twelve year olds:
- Help mom and dad rake leaves in the yard.
- Walk the dogs with mom or dad, or your brother or sister.
- Take a family walk after dinner.
- Play tag or ride bikes.
- In the spring and summer help with planting and maintaining a garden.
- Help dad or mom wash the car.
- Push the baby stroller for mom or dad when walking around the neighborhood.
- Go to the park and identify different birds or trees.
- Keep track of the foods you eat using a meal tracker. You can download one here. Have mom and dad do it too, and see how well everyone does!
- Walk with mom or dad to the local museum or art gallery and have a look!
- Take jumbo chalk and play hopscotch on the sidewalk.
